This is my favorite piece because it represents the teachings of Amida Buddha–perseverance, resiliency, endurance, and forgiveness– characteristics that have played an integral part in shaping the history and culture of Japanese Americans in California.

Barbara Sonnenblick –
How can anyone look at his face and not smile?
Jae Chang – Ewer with lid
The graceful color and reserved yet ornate details take me back to the golden days of Korean history.
han jihye – Blossoming plum
It’s very good!
Stephanie Yoon – Jar
It’s simple and comforting.
victoria santos – Headcloth
I voted because of ifts geometric patterns and colors.
jasmin arneja – Large footed cup with decoration of wild goats
Splendid lines, elemental design, gracious form and deft execution. It is graphic, simple yet rich in textures, details and whimsy. The dynamism captivates my attention.
Penelope Snipper – The Wave
Growing up in Japan, bamboo had so many different meanings. We ate it and the trees sheltered our house from the typhoons. The sound of the leaves in the wind is the soothing sound that lulled me to sleep. It is strong and bends in the wind. My grandmother always used the bamboo as a metaphor for our lives.
jasmin arneja – Head of the Buddhist deity Mahasthamaprapta
The expression on her face mesmerizes me. It represents total bliss, peace and transports me to an otherworldly, dreamy place. There is a sense of stillness and contentment. The soft lines and curves, the tactility of the material and the earthy colors make this statue a sensual delight.
jasmin arneja – Bowl with splashed and incised decoration
Its dark brown, green and ochre colors are so pleasing. I like the coexistence of the complex with the simple, held harmoniously together in this round surface. The layers, splashes and organic designs evoke an aesthetic that is modern, spontaneous and fluid.
