This guardian, armed with fangs and weapons, is supposed to be intimidating. But instead, he looks rather jolly. If anything, he seems friendly and sweet. It’s like he’s holding a baseball bat, looking for a friendly pick-up game.

Ginny Meyer – Ewer with lid
It is splendid. Perfect color, precise lines, it radiates glory as well as serenity.
Gaby Knauth – Bridal robe (hwalot)
This gown is so much more beautiful on the back than on the front. I really like all the embroidery on the back
Madelon Montobbio – The Buddha Shakyamuni enthroned
I think it is one of the most beautiful Shakyamunis in the museum. I love the fabulous elaborate detailed arch the calm peaceful shakyamuni, the lovely shimmy gilt bronze finish and the contrast of the quiet Buddha and the exploding movement of surrounding the Buddha.
Love the figures bursting out of the arch, smiling with arms flung out, twisting serpent figures. It is a tour de force coming out of Mongolia. He holds an alms bowl yet is surrounded by luscious elaborate arch.
Kathy Henschel – Dog, China
He has such a happy personality, ready to jump up and run barking across the gallery
victoria santos – Burial urn
Its design and simplicity of form show an elegance as befits its use as a receptacle for the ashes of the dead. The figure seems to act as a guardian for the deceased.
Nancy Hom – Which is Earth? No. 7
As a Chinese American artist, I am drawn to contemporary work that blends both Eastern and Western sensibilities. Liu Guogong’s innovative brushstrokes evoke the feeling of traditional Chinese painting, but are very modern in application.
I also have an affinity for images that take my imagination beyond the ordinary. This painting’s deep blue and black palette creates an ethereal mood that pulls me in. I can spend a long time immersed in the space between worlds.
Mowen Yuan – Cup
Beautiful calligraphy on a piece of beautiful jade. The lamb-fat like jade is very rare in nowadays, the cup was from one whole piece of jade with great skills.
James Housley – Seated Ganesha
It’s one of the finest sculptures in the entire collection
Jim Sipes – Shakyamuni as an ascetic
I can tell he is the Buddha to be. Although he has not yet achieved enlightenment, he is serene even when suffering. This jade sculpture beautifully and clearly shows it.
