This work is fascinating because, though called a ‘money tree’ the coin-like forms are believed to also represent a joining of heaven, the outer circle, and earth, the inner square. Altogether, with the Queen Mother of the West surmounting the piece, and various immortals and fabulous beasts–and the Buddha—this seems to actually be a representation of the cosmos.
